Questions About Hospitality Jobs

Sandra asks…

Are jobs in food and hospitality laying off or hiring with the economy the way it is?

The economy is bad according to some sources, so how is this affecting food and hospitality jobs , are restaurants laying off workers in this job sector, or are they hiring them ?

The answers:

Hiring, as always.

Not as much as before, but still hiring. Also they can afford to be picky.

Donna asks…

What is the best, or most used, job site in Canada for hospitality jobs?

I’m looking for a bar or server job in Vancouver, Canada.

I’ve only just moved to the city, and am having problems finding a good website. In my home country, there’s 1 major job site that everyone uses. In Canada, there doesn’t seem to be one, at least that I can find.

So, when looking for hospitality jobs in Canada, what’s the best website(s) to look at? and is it worth looking in the papers these days?

Any help from a Canadian or someone who actually knows would be great! :)

The answers:

I am a former chef and Workopolis is a good site, and otf the local newspapers site, there are hospitality websites that are available, more for work outside B.C.

Betty asks…

Where can my wife find hospitality type jobs?

My wife is looking for a new job. A degree in hospitality and she is fantastic at planning parties, decorating, she has helped her florist friend with wedding arrangements. She is very Martha Stewart-ish. She does not want to work at a restaurant or hotel. Can anyone recommend any sites for her to look for jobs in this ballpark that she may look into?

The answers:

Bill,

Sounds like your wife has great skills that others would wish they had….

Perhaps the best thing for her to do to get her feet wet & build contacts before trying to strike out on her own is for her to consider the following:

- Work with a caterer
- Work with a wedding planner
- Become a concierge at a goodly sized hotel (or maybe, even better, a high-end boutique hotel)

With the kinds of skills & contacts she’d develop in any of those jobs she could test the waters to see if it’s something she’d like to do as a freelancer. If you live near an urban center or place with Fortune 100-500 businesses, she might even be able to pitch being a freelance “business concierge” – but I’d still suggest she do the internship type of work first.

Good luck! Best wishes to you both. Very considerate of you to look out for options for her.

looking for hospitality jobs in alberta?

i am thinking of taking a semester off to work in Alberta i am in the hospitality and tourism program at Centennial College in Toronto ON, so i need a job where accommodation can be provided at a low cost… i just want to know if anyone knows of any good job websites i can look at…or what the jobs are like for auto mechanics.. my boyfriend is one and he was thinking of going our to alberta.. we hear there is good money to be made out there.

The answers:

They are tons of jobs in calgary. HRDC job bank, calgary herald classifieds, calgary sun classifieds. Or just call around and you might get hired due to labour shortage. The peak is over but it is still pretty good job wise. For a mechanics job apply by going through the phone book and looking for shops. As for cheap accommodations look through the calgary herald real estate rentals. You can rent after you get a job and before you come to calgary. Avoid NE calgary and most of the central SE. Like dover, forest lawn, marlborough, forest heights. They are the higher crime rate areas. Police pick up prostitutes and drop them off in forest lawn. FYI. Keep all your receipts for moving and disconnecting reconnecting phone, utilities, etc… Because they are tax deductible. Keep all your receipts even if you think they are stupid. There are some funny deductions but you have to read the moving expenses and employment section in the income tax forms. Also over the past four years the people in calgary have become more rude/aggressive especially on th road. So be a good curtious driver.

Paul asks…

What jobs can I get with Hospitality & Catering qualifications ?

For Work Experience I chose to work in a canteen at Colmans so I was assistant chef for 2 weeks and I enjoyed that but in a years time I will be hoping to become a proper chef yet I don’t want to work in a hotel/army. I have taken GCSE subjects: English , Maths , Science , ICT & am doing a course at college in ABC Level 1 in Hospitality & Catering. Basically what I am saying is,

What jobs in Hospitality & Catering can I get with my qualifications without having a tough time in a kitchen without working in a hotel or in the army ?
Thanks in advance.

The answers:

Casino hosting, event coordinator, wedding planner…as for not wanting to work in a hotel, you don’t necessarily have to work in the kitchen. You could work in just the banquet department, or you could be involved with Food & Beverage and not be slinging room service food…

Lizzie asks…

Does New zealand currently issue work permits for hospitality jobs to overseas people?

The answers:

Yes, but you need to secure one first- and it depends on which country you are coming from (if its say the UK or US etc, then its less of an issue). You will need a sponsor first unless its under 3 months.

Helen asks…

hospitality career? What are the best jobs in the hotel business?

What jobs in hospitality pay well and have the best chance of getting to the General Manager spot
Hospitality career? What jobs in the hotel business offer the best salaries and the quickest path to the General Manager Position.

The answers:

The sales jobs are the best. You can start entry level at around 50 thousand and bonus. Catering is good as well. Pretty much you will sell blocks of guest rooms, banquet and meeting rooms, and the hotel services and amenties. You only need a on-line certificate to get started. I used ahla.com and www.aprinda.com

Hospitality sales and caterng is a pretty good career, and you move up the ranks fairly fast as well. One guy I know is a GM after just 5 years and makes over 120 thousand.
